Protection of valuable data requires that customers follow all Imation
manufacturing specifications relative to the use, storage, and transportation.
Listed below are some of the key specifications in these areas:
OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
- Condition: 24 hours before use
- Environment: Atmosphere free of dust particles and corrosive gases
- Temperature: 60°F to 90°F
- Humidity: 20% to 80% RH
- Bulk Erasure: Do Not bulk erase servo written cartridges.
LONG TERM STORAGE
- Temperature: 59°F to 77°F
- Humidity: 30% to 40% RH
- Environment: Atmosphere free of dust particles and corrosive gases.
TRANSPORTATION OF CARTRIDGES
- Temperature: -10°F to 120°F
- Humidity: 5% to 80% RH
- Containers: Follow basic packaging guidelines and/or use containers specified for media transport.
PROPER PACKAGING
Proper packaging of cartridges is imperative to protect the life of the cartridge, and the
integrity of the data contained on it. Cartridges shipped with inadequate packaging could
be damaged, which may result in data loss or reduction to the useful life of the cartridge.
PROPER PACKAGING BASICS
- Cartridges should always be contained in a plastic bag or shrink wrap approved for use with tape cartridges.
- Cartridges should be placed in a shipping carton which meets the following requirements: 200lbs burst strength, 32lbs/in edge crush, 65lbs gross weight.
- If cartridges are not in original Imation packaging (i.e., cartridge quantities < 30), bagged
cartridges should be wrapped with several layers of bubble wrap to eliminate movement
and protect from any external impacts.

TAPE STORAGE TURNS 50 AND STILL GOING STRONG
It seems like yesterday . . . but it s been 50 years since the first commercially available
magnetic data tape was pioneered by IBM and Imation (as part of 3M). A breakthrough so
exciting it ushered in a new era of information processing. The year was 1952. And the
product was the Model 726 tape drive, which used a 12 movie reel to store 1.4 megabytes
on magnetic media. The introduction of this reliable, enduring data storage medium was
just the beginning. A half-century of innovation later, Imation now delivers the most comprehensive portfolio of
tape cartridges and optical media for desktop, network and data center applications to a global audience.
This keeps Imation at the forefront of developing higher capacity and higher performance storage media.
